Tim Maguire, the Chief Procurement Officer for Accounting and Financial Services, manages the University Supply Chain and is leading the reorganization of the Supply Chain Management. 

When did you join the University?
I started working for UC Davis in late January 2016.  However, I have been a part of the greater Davis and UC Davis community since 1999.

What is your day-to-day role in stewarding university resources?
I have the awesome responsibility to manage the University’s Supply Chain.  This includes: Procurement & Contracts Management, Distribution Services, Store House Management, Aggie Surplus, Accounts Payable, Travel and Expense Accounting.  Each of these links within the Supply Chain are inter-dependent on the others to create a strong support network to serve the mission of the University.  

What's an example of how you delight customers? 
A delighted customer is one that sees us as a trusted business partner, one that supports its customers’ needs while maintaining compliance to University Policies and State Laws.  My approach is to learn as much as I can about the customers’ business requirements then explore solutions and approaches to achieve the desired result.  My goal is to maximize value to the customer and the University.  A great example of this is the support for Housing & Dining where together we are working to manage the transition from Sodexo to Self-Operation.  The Supply Chain Team is working closely with Dining Services to establish new Suppliers, Partnerships and Technologies to support and create a seamless transition.  

What do you like best about working at UC Davis? 
I love being a part of the UC Davis community and knowing that the work my team and I do contributes to the improvement of our society and our world.  Additionally, the University is such a dynamic Institution; it’s exciting and challenging to be involved in so many different business engagements.  

What’s the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is managing the number of unique requirements of Researchers and other Clients while maintaining compliance to the Public Contracting Code. Additionally, there are specific requirements for management of purchases associated with Federal Grants.  All of these types of business engagements have fine lines that need to be maintained and managed carefully so as not to put the University at risk.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know. 
My first ship that I reported to while serving in the US Navy was the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). It was an honor to serve aboard her and was very exciting to be one of the Ship’s Navigation Officers.  I have many sea stories to share, so be careful if you ask!

What’s something you like to do when you’re not at work?
My family and I enjoy spending time at our cabin up near Lake Almanor.  It’s such a peaceful spot and it’s so dark at night that you can actually see satellites pass across the sky.  The fishing is also phenomenal, however, the catching is not so great…
